A mile down, at the top of the world's darkness, Atlantea turns its lamps up for the high hour.
Everyone is swimming the same way tonight. Toward the Sphere.
Deepball. Their answer to the old surface game called football.
narrThere is no floor down here. So we built a sport that finally admitted it.
NERIN VELL. First season. Vent-district kid. Terrified.
teammateBreathe, rookie. You've got gills for it.
nerinThat's the problem. I can breathe. Doesn't mean I can play.
KEEP ATLANTEA WEIRD
Outside, the tidegate is a zoo, same as every home match.
vendorReef tacos! Two for a shell! Get 'em before the drift picks up!
fanKEEP IT WEIRD, GILLHORNS!
The pearl drops. And the water comes apart in every direction at once.
Nerin does the one thing the vent kids know in their bones. She finds a rising column and lets the ocean do the lifting.
coachVent's blowing warm on the low side — RIDE IT!
WHUMP
She forgets the first rule. In a game with no floor, the hit you don't see comes from above.
WHUMP
GOOOAL
She sends it. Straight through the vent-ring. The whole Sphere loses its mind.
teammateRing's WIDE OPEN — SEND IT!
And because this is Atlantea, the celebration is a concert nobody scheduled.
fanLive music capital of the deep, baby. We win, we sing. We lose, we ALSO sing.

Then the water goes still.
Not quiet. Still. Every player feels it at once, in the gills, in the teeth.
A hum too low to hear. The lamps pulse. And then the impossible, gentle thing:
the whole arena lifts.
coach...she's waking up.
Atlantea was never only a city. It was a vessel, waiting, the whole time.
Nerin looks up, past the lamps, past the black water, toward a surface she has never once seen — and the stars she is about to.
